Have you ever surfed the web in a cute coffee shop in Amsterdam? Please don’t do so without a VPN. They are not only there for tech nerds, but they also exist for everyone that wants to go online in a safe way.
Everybody has heard of them, but what are they?
Well, whether you want to watch films that are blocked in your country, to protect yourself or just want to be anonymous: VPN is there for you. VPNgids.nl reached out to us with a question: can you make an easy-to-understand video for our diverse target group which consist of gamers, working class and older people that want to protect their privacy? Make the abstract concept of our technology clear so that everybody can use and understand VPN.
The concept of a VPN can be very abstract, especially for people that are not so techy. That’s why we came up with a metaphor to clarify the difference between being online with and without a VPN. By surfing the sea as an analogy for being online we made the concept of a VPN clear and easy to remember. We worked with bright and colourful images for the scenes with VPN, and dark and mysterious colours for the unsecured internet experience. The concept stays abstract, because explaining VPN in detail can be extremely hard to understand. The big difference between freedom and security is simplified by using visual contrast.

The result is a colourful animated video that takes the viewer on a visual journey. We start with an explanation on how the internet works without VPN, stating the dangers and risks with dark images. Then we introduce VPN, with lots of colours and positive sounds. It is like using a superpower that makes you invisible and invincible. It gives you full freedom.
