Radboud Universiteit

bringing science to the public

case

Society benefits enormously from science. That’s beyond question. The same goes for the citizens of Nijmegen. However, people often wonder what exactly a university is working on. Radboud University together with the municipality of Nijmegen followed up on this question. Meetings and brochures don’t work as well as they used to. A visual stimulus is needed. That’s where we come in, we love visual stimuli!

Scientific research is full of complex material and nuances. To make this understandable we came up with ‘Sit With a Scientist.’ The scientist provides us with input, and we rewrite it. Since scientists are scientists, and not professional storytellers, we assist them with the help of a teleprompter. Next to that we produced animations, which we incorporated in the video in a humorous way. Some comic relief makes it easier to understand, more approachable and above all, fun to watch.

result

Videos of about three minutes each, where scientists give a behind-the-scenes look at their work. It contributes to the relationship between the city and the university while also covering subjects like ALS, designer drugs, ecology and cell towers. With a QRcode placed in various locations around the city, citizens can watch the videos. It is also used online to bridge the gap between the university and the municipality. Thousands of people have already engaged via this way.

“It looks fantastic. Thank you for the great work you’ve delivered and the pleasant collaboration so far. This gives confidence for the rest of the series.”
