we are in business to save our home planet

case

Patagonia, a designer of ‘outdoor clothing’ and ‘gear for the silent sports’. A brand with a vocalized sustainable mission. And you see that in the clothes they produce and the way they do business. Their credo: “We are in business to save our home planet.”

They don’t hide their mission. Not at all. In 2020 they sued Donald Trump for ‘stealing’ National Parks and with quotes like ‘Vote the basterds out’ and ‘Don’t buy this jacket’ it is a brand with a clear goal. They made planet earth their only shareholder by fully giving up ownership of the company. Now all their profits – around $100 million a year – is used to fight climate change.

It can be hard to visualise a mission like this into a story that inspires. We did it with the use of a high-end 2d animated film. Something you don’t see quite often anymore.

In this animated film we tell the brand story of Patagonia, with attention for their grassroots in clothing, their focus areas all over the world and the vast, rugged mountains in the Andes that gave them their name. In their logo you can see the iconic chain of mountains, which we fluently combine with our animation in the last frames.

The result – next to a lot of blood, sweat, tears, love, and overtime – is a product we are proud of. A case we use regularly and often brings compliments.

storyboard

After brainstorming on a concept with our client, we write a script. Then we finalise the story and turn it into a storyboard. By doing this we can visualise ideas and experiment with different scenes. Now we tune, try out new perspectives, put in some detail, and tune again. Next: illustrate…

illustrations

The style we used had to have the recognizable colours that Patagonia uses in their brand, like the iconic purple. Next to that we also paid attention to the lighting and the details which make animated videos like this come alive.

frame by frame

We make this animation frame by frame, which really means we must put in the hours. Every second counts 30 frames, that means 30 unique drawings per second. Around 60 seconds, times 30 frames. We will let you do the math (it’s 1800 drawings). Yes, a lot of drawings. And yes, quite costly. But, if you serve a greater purpose like Patagonia, we will figure it out.

The iconic mountain range also appears in Patagonia’s logo. At the end of the animation, the two elements seamlessly blend into each other.
